Bukky Leo has been in the forefront of London’s Jazz and African music scenes since arriving in the UK in 1982 with the equivalent of a signed endorsement from Fela Kuti & Tony Allen the co-inventors of Afrobeat with whom he had played back in Nigeria. Bukky was actually mentored by Tony Allen and went on to join Fela’s band.
Signing with Eddie Piller and Gilles Peterson’s Acid Jazz label presented Bukky’s music to a broader potential audience. Bukky’s debut Acid Jazz release 'Rejoice in Righteousness' went straight to number one in the rhythm and blues, dance and jazz charts.
Over the years Bukky has remained active as a live musician and also as a recording artist both with his Black Egypt project as well as music releases and tribute shows dedicated to the music of both Fela Kuti and William Onyaebor.
Bukky’s latest “Burning Manifestation” presents Bukky in ‘straight ahead’ meets Afrocentricity mode with a top notch unit comprising the cream of London Jazz community, including ‘Punk Jazz ’ purveyor Seb Rochford on the kit. Burning Manifestation is a compendium of studio cuts performed and recorded over the years with the dedication, panache and old school swing we have come to expect - Gerry Lyseight
