Released in 1986, Flaming Sword is the sole album by Liverpool duo Care, a project formed by Paul Simpson (formerly of The Wild Swans) and Ian Broudie (later of The Lightning Seeds). Though the band’s lifespan was brief, the album has since gained cult status for its lush songwriting and shimmering production.
Blending post-punk sensitivity with polished mid-’80s pop textures, Flaming Sword is marked by bright, melodic hooks and a sense of romantic melancholy. Tracks like “My Boyish Days” and “Flaming Sword” showcase Simpson’s emotive vocals set against Broudie’s clean, chiming guitar lines and sophisticated arrangements. The production reflects the era’s glossy aesthetic while maintaining an underlying introspective depth.
