Nat Birchall's latest LP takes a wild swim in the natural, no-frills rill that is early 60s Jamaican ska, butterflying backwards through the various horn sections and rookery rhythms that made the era. Drawing on stylistic trails of legends Don Drummond, Tommy McCook, Roland Alphonso and Jackie Mittoo - all jazz-trainees without whose influence The Skatalites and Prince Buster's All Stars would not have existed - the release is Birchall's respectful panegyric to a now often overlooked heyday. Recorded in mono, Birchall plays every instrument, handling all production, mixing and mastering himself: 'Menelik', 'Ska Wa-Wa' and 'Liberated Sounds' all bring a fresh, boughing, faithful pulse.
