Phyllis Dillon was a Jamaican rocksteady and reggae singer of international yet underground renown; she was an artist best complemented in her day for navigating a largely male-dominated industry which nevertheless found space to accommodate her. 'Rocksteady', aptly named after the genre in which the album resides, here gets a release via Archive after being officially first released via Trojan. Characteristically snappy, fluting and raw recordings back up Dillon's wispy, harmonic vocals, which are often backed up by a dreamy backing choir and delicately complex melodies.
