The debut LP from Leeds instrumental reggae quartet The Flying Hats, assembled around the 20-year rhythm section partnership of drummer Sam Hobbs (Work Money Death) and bassist Neil Innes (The Lewis Express, The Sorcerers), now with Bob Birch on organ and Chris Dawkins on guitar. Dawkins, former session guitarist for Nightmares On Wax, died in early 2025; The Return Of is his last recorded work. The album sits between instrumental rocksteady and New Orleans funk without fully belonging to either, 'An Autumn Sun' and 'Strong Fish' jetting off in spirit to Kingston, while 'Grafter' and 'Bust Up' prefers to use the Meters as its stylistic measuring stick; and the seven-minute coda 'Iron Fist' lets Birch play entirely against the grain of whichever chord sequence Hobbs and Innes concocted beforehand.
