The final offering from Chicago's Rotary Connection remains one of the most visionary recordings to emerge from the city's late 60s experimental soul movement. Steered by arranger Charles Stepney and powered by the radiant vocals of Minnie Riperton it merges orchestral psych-soul with raw political charge. 'I Am The Black Gold Of The Sun' sets the tone-epic, transcendent and deeply rooted-whilst 'Love Has Fallen On Me' balances lush string arrangements with Riperton's delicate delivery. Elsewhere, Terry Callier's 'Song For Everyman' brings grounded introspection and 'Hey, Love' itself is intimate but far from soft. This isn't funk, not quite soul, not rock either-just a perfectly unstable compound of all three. Though overlooked in its time, this reissue gives new weight to a record that influenced artists from 4 Hero to Radiohead. A defining moment in Stepney's singular legacy.
