Drawn from the Audio Productions catalogue of early 80s Nairobi, this is a compilation that captures a luminous period in Kenya's urban music, when rumba and benga intertwined across bars, dancehalls, and borderlines. Many of these 7" recordings were near impossible to find outside East Africa, now restored with the grit and vitality of their original pressings intact. Super Wanyika's 'Matatizo Nimeyazoea' moves with tensile rhythm and smoky horn phrasing, Issa Juma's voice carrying both ache and defiance. Orchestra Shika Shika's 'Diana', led by Jimmy Monimambo and Lovy Longomba, shimmers with lilting guitar interplay and hypnotical cadence. Tracks by Ambira Boys Band and Les Kizai-Zai push further toward the ecstatic edge of benga's pulse. Together, they form a quintessential portrait of Kenya's restless, melodic dance music in motion.
